Down The Road is a film that captures the beauty and tragedy of Central America. In this dynamic region of the world, young American adventurers set out on a three month journey to learn more about themselves, others, and life. With a loose itinerary and an open road, they had a world of stories in front of them. The road they traveled was certainly the one less traveled, and for the sake of this film, it has undoubtedly made all the difference.
Beginning in Colombia, they realized the extent of their American naivete immediately. This only fueled them to travel further and learn more. From there, they hitched a ride with an English skipper across the Caribbean en route to Panama. Their Caribbean adventures alone could fill a documentary, but that only scratched the surface of the encounters to come. From Panama, they purchased a beat-up Korean SUV to take them north as far as El Salvador. This car, dubbed La Tortuga, would prove not only to be the source of many hardships and conflicts, but also the means to the traveler's most powerful experience.
This is a story that combines youthful energy and humor with profound social commentary. It moves from place to place with a rough authenticity that draws you in to the rawness of the experience. It is beautiful and it is tragic. It leaves you craving your own incredible adventure, and better yet, it leaves you believing that you can have one.
