The Surface of Things, the best selling autobiography by literary “it boy” C.C. Thompson, is a harrowing account of a life on the street, battling drugs and working as a street hustler. There’s just one problem - it’s someone else’s life. That someone, a young man named Chase, discovers that his life story has been stolen, and is determined to track down C.C. and get the truth.
Instead he finds Kathy Donovan. Kathy is a photographer who discovered and mentored C.C. It was Kathy who helped him get his publishing deal, and now it is Kathy who the publishers and the press go to when they need to get a message to the recluse that C.C. has become.
While friendly at first, it soon becomes clear that that Kathy has her own agenda and is much more than C.C.’s mentor. An intense game of psychological warfare ensues between Chase and Kathy as each try to unravel the truth about the other while protecting their own secrets.
The sudden appearance of C.C. only complicates matters further. Soon Chase and Kathy’s pasts collide in unexpected ways and psychological traps become physical ones as Chase’s thirst for revenge opens old wounds and creates bloody new ones.
